Christmas table at Skansen
travel | sweden | food | restaurant review | travel food diary
After our little adventure in the north of Sweden, Kajsa and I flew down to Stockholm where we were spending a few days. We were lucky enough to stay with Kajsa’s grandparents who lived quite centrally in Stockholm and one of the days they very very kindly took us out to Skansen.
Skansen is like a big park / zoo / wildlife park / museum on one of Stockholms islands. We took the ferry out and explored Skansen which is basically Sweden and its history and animals condensed on one island which is very cool! You basically get a run down of all the different parts of Sweden as well as see all the animals like moose and Swedish seals and reindeer of course. Very cool, both in awesomeness and in temperature!
The main reason we went to Skansen was so that we could go to one of the restaurants and experience a proper traditional Swedish Christmas table. Which is quite literally what it sounds and as amazing as it sounds! It is something Swedes do and basically it is a HUGE buffet with lots and lots of choices of typical Swedish food and you eat specific things for specific courses.
The first course is salmon and herring, with a side of potatoes and sauces. Then you have meats like reindeer and hams followed with the heavier dishes like Swedish meatballs and ribs and then dessert. Throughout the whole meal there are breads like the typical rye bread and cheeses and lots and lots of sides to pick from. The dessert is amazing too, every choice under the sun like rice pudding and apple cake and then a whole table of sweets! Literally a whole table of just candy… it is pretty amazing!! Just have a look at the photos and you’ll see what I mean. It was such a cool experience and we were soooo full afterwards but it was great!! A massive thank you to Kajsa and her wonderful grandparents for having me and taking me out to experience this amazing lunch… all I can think about it Swedish food now and I could write and write about how amazing it was… but it is making me too hungry and I have no food on me… So enjoy the photos!
