Day 5 of walking the W trek in Patagonia
Date: 2 February 2016
Location: Domo Frances to Refugio Grey
Hours of walking: 6
Today was the day we would walk to our final Refugio and get to see Grey glacier! The first two hours were quite easy and very pleasant, again with the weather being perfect we had nothing to complain about! So we walked to another lodge (not where we were staying but one on the way), stopped and had a snack and drink before venturing out for the rest of the walk. The walk to our final lodge was quite long at first because it was mainly uphill in the heat, but our spirits where still high. Especially once we got to the half way point, the peak of the day and got to see the glacier for the first time. I was in awe, I had never seen anything like it before! It was essentially a massive glacier running into the lake with icebergs swimming around in the middle of the lake. I had never even an iceberg before so that was pretty cool! The walk down was petty easy and we were happy that we weren't walking uphill anymore, although half the time we were thinking about how unpleasant it would be to walk this back up again tomorrow. It was quite steep at parts and we were going to have to do it all again on the way back the next day. Once we got to the Refugio we dumped out bags and did the last 15 minutes to the final lookout. Which was great! It was just in front of the glacier and we sat there for a while just looking at it. The Refugio itself was the nicest we had stayed in and it looked like an expensive ski lodge with a bar area and everything. So that night we had out dinner and then sat down with some drinks with a guy we had met that night and just chatted away for hours. It was a great way to end our final night on the trek – although we did know we would have an exceptionally long day the next day so we couldn't rejoice just yet. Only one more day to go!
