my 20th birthday
Spending a birthday alone... now that is something weird for me. And while technically I wasn't alone, I wasn't in the middle of my 'travel-travels' or trekking through the Andes alone, but, I wasn't at home either to have my friends and family gush over me on my special day. To be honest I didn't know what to think of it... was it going to feel like my birthday? Am I really turning 20?! (yes that is a a scary and exciting thought that I'll be in my 20's!), when do I open my presents etc? Either way, it actually turned out pretty great... for all of you who don't know, I am currently an au pair for a lovely family in the south of France, so my birthday was spent with them.
It started off pretty great, a sleep in for once! I didn't have to get out of bed early in the morning to et the kids ready for school and no one was going to interrupt me - it was bliss! Second step was to venture out into the kitchen where they had decorated everything with balloons and a happy birthday sign and hugs were waiting for me - that was also great!
Then came my favourite part, baking my birthday cake! I had already made my chocolate mousse the night before and all that was left was to bake the cake. Which for me is so much fun and baking is always the best way for me to spend my day! The next events included Skype calls with the family, opening gifts with them (on the other side of the world), having lunch and finishing off my cake for the afternoon tea.
For afternoon tea my adopted family invited some friends over with their two young boys (who, yes I have met a few times before) and we all enjoyed my cake together and they sung happy birthday and it was just a great afternoon! Plus, I got to have some of that fake french champagne that I love so much! and yes... I know it was my 20th birthday... I just don't like the real stuff... sorry Maman and Papy!
I ended up having a really nice day. Totally different to any other birthday I have ever had, but it was an interesting experience spending it away from the people closest to me... something I'll remember for sure! Plus my adopted family were so kind and made me feel super special too which was great!
Below are a few photos of the day and what I got up to! The penguin photos and faceprint were actually the day before my birthday, but they were in birthday fashion, so it counts to be in this blog post!
Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday and to my family who made it special even though they are on the other side of the world! xx
